NASA/GEWEX (National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment) Surface Radiation Budget (SRB) has released its latest radiation dataset, version 3.0. We examine the accuracy of the monthly mean global radiation in China using surface-observed radiation (SOR) data at 42 stations during the period 1984?C2004. Overall comparison shows a general overestimation of satellite retrieval radiation data with a bias of 14.6?W?m?2 and a root mean square error of 25.9?W?m?2. Differences at individual stations suggested satellite data are consistently higher than surface measurements over eastern China (110°E), but occasional underestimation occurs in Western China, especially Southwest China. Intra-annual variation analysis indicates that SRB satellite radiation can capture the annual cycle well. For trend of global radiations, there are evident discrepancies between satellite retrievals and surface measurements for both the entire period and segmental terms. For the entire period from 1984 to 2004, most stations show a positive trend based on surface measurements, while the majority of collocated pixels show a negative trend. Segmental trends demonstrated that the principal difference occurred during the first period of 1981?C1994. After 1994, the two datasets change similarly. Therefore, trend analysis in terms of detecting global dimming/brightening remains very difficult as surface measurements and satellite products do not agree yet. In addition, some proposals are made towards better understanding of the bias of satellite products and to improve further the satellite retrieval algorithm with better representation of both cloud and aerosol properties. 相似文献

The impact of cloud microphysical processes on the simulated intensity and track of Typhoon Rananim is discussed and analyzed
in the second part of this study. The results indicate that when the cooling effect due to evaporation of rain water is excluded,
the simulated 36-h maximum surface wind speed of Typhoon Rananim is about 7 m s−1 greater than that from all other experiments; however, the typhoon landfall location has the biggest bias of about 150 km
against the control experiment. The simulated strong outer rainbands and the vertical shear of the environmental flow are
unfavorable for the deepening and maintenance of the typhoon and result in its intensity loss near the landfall. It is the
cloud microphysical processes that strengthen and create the outer spiral rainbands, which then increase the local convergence
away from the typhoon center and prevent more moisture and energy transport to the inner core of the typhoon. The developed
outer rainbands are supposed to bring dry and cold air mass from the middle troposphere to the planetary boundary layer (PBL).
The other branch of the cold airflow comes from the evaporation of rain water itself in the PBL while the droplets are falling.
Thus, the cut-off of the warm and moist air to the inner core and the invasion of cold and dry air to the eyewall region are
expected to bring about the intensity reduction of the modeled typhoon. Therefore, the deepening and maintenance of Typhoon

At the interface between the lower atmosphere and sea surface, sea spray might significantly influence air-sea heat fluxes and subsequently, modulate upper ocean temperature during a typhoon passage. The effects of sea spray were introduced into the parameterization of sea surface roughness in a 1-D turbulent model, to investigate the effects of sea spray on upper ocean temperature in the Kuroshio Extension area, for the cases of two real typhoons from 2006, Yagi and Soulik. Model output was compared with data from the Kuroshio Extension Observatory (KEO), and Reynolds and AMSRE satellite remote sensing sea surface temperatures. The results indicate drag coefficients that include the spray effect are closer to observations than those without, and that sea spray can enhance the heat fluxes (especially latent heat flux) considerably during a typhoon passage. Consequently, the model results with heat fluxes enhanced by sea spray simulate better the cooling process of the SST and upper-layer temperature profiles. Additionally, results from the simulation of the passage of typhoon Soulik (that passed KEO quickly), which included the sea spray effect, were better than for the simulated passage of typhoon Yagi (that crossed KEO slowly).
